B-Executive Summary |
The Institute continues to have a presence at both the local, state, and national level. We retain an Internet presence on both the web as well as Facebook. We continue to strengthen our ties to Congregation Achduth Vesholom, to the regional Jewish community, and, at an international level, to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) through our programming and fundraising. Our public programming this past year included a featured lecture given by the USHMM Director of University Programs on-site at Achduth Vesholom. In June 2013, we successfully secured $5000 in external funding from the Salon Foundation to bring the USHMM traveling exhibition "Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals" to Fort Wayne in Fall 2014. We have secured gallery space for this event with Artlink Downtown, thus opening new possibilities for collaboration with civic and cultural organizations in Fort Wayne. Fort Wayne will be the first city in Indiana to host this exhibition, a critical time if HJR-6 appears on the ballot as an amendment to Indiana's state constitution. The Institute potentially can play an influential role at the state level, consistent with our mission, in helping educate citizens through providing a more circumspect historical context for hot-button social issues, as in this case with gay marriage.
We continue to make progress toward offering a week-long symposium on teaching the Holocaust that targets pre-service teachers from around the state. After getting feedback from a potential donor based in Fort Wayne, we have begun to contact other potential donors from around the state to help subsidize the cost of this symposium and make it truly reflective of its statewide significance.
We have scheduled two lectures on topics related to Holocaust and Genocide Studies, given by IPFW faculty at Achduth Vesholom for Fall 2013. Not only does this event strengthen our ties to a vital community partner. It also helps promote the scholarly accomplishments of IPFW faculty to a broader community audience.
As individual faculty, Steve Carr and David Lindquist maintain high profile relationships at the local, regional, national, and international levels with the most important organizations dedicated to Jewish life and Holocaust and Genocide education. We both engage in an active scholarly agenda devoted to research and effective pedagogy centered around Holocaust and Genocide Studies. |
