A-Mission To promote public awareness of the Holocaust and other genocides; to encourage and support scholarship, research, and teaching about the Holocaust and genocide; and to promote public participation in efforts to confront contemporary genocide as it occurs.

B-Executive Summary

The Institute continues to have a presence at both the local and national level.  We retain an Internet presence on both the web as well as Facebook, and we successfully sponsored a series of high-profile events on the IPFW campus.  Our half-day symposium in conjunction with the U.S. Holocaust Museum on how to teach the Holocaust effectively recently earned national recognition.  Last year, we successfully secured approximately $3000 in external funding from Temple Achduth Vesholom.  Our highlight event was a visit from filmmaker Sandra Schulberg in September, who screened a restored version of a documentary on the Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunals.

 

As individual faculty, Steve Carr and David Lindquist maintain high profile relationships at the local, regional, national, and international levels with the most important organizations dedicated to Jewish life and Holocaust and Genocide education.  We both engage in an active scholarly agenda devoted to research and effective pedagogy centered around Holocaust and Genocide Studies.

 2. To encourage and support scholarship, research, and teaching about the Holocaust and genocide A mass email sent out by U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Director Sara J. Bloomfield recently mentioned Indiana U - Purdue U Fort Wayne by name, noting the half-day symposium the Institute hosted and organized in conjunction with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum's Belfer First Step program, a national outreach initiative to help beginning K-12 teachers find ways to cover the Holocaust effectively.  The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is one of the premiere institutions in the world devoted to the memorialization of the Holocaust. 1
 
 3. To promote public participation in efforts to confront contemporary genocide as it occurs Successfully secured approximately $3000 in external funding from Temple Achduth Vesholom, which brought producer-director Sandra Schulberg to Fort Wayne to talk about her restoration of her father Stuart Schulberg's documentary on the Nuremberg war crimes tribunal, Nuremberg: Its Lessons and Legacies (1948).  Congregation Achduth Vesholom and Fort Wayne Cinema Center co-sponsored one of the first 35mm screenings of the film in Indiana. 2,3

  • Steven Alan Carr awarded IPFW Mid-Career Faculty Research Support Grant for "Complicated Dictator": The Untold Story of the Concentration Camp Scenes from Chaplin's 1940 Hollywood Anti-Fascist Comedy That Audiences Never Saw.
  • Book chapter by Steven Alan Carr published in The Modern Jewish Experience in World Cinema (Brandeis U P, 2011).
  • David Lindquist was selected to participate in the Berlin Summer Academy Program “The Holocaust and Present Day Jewish Life in Germany.”  This program, held in Berlin, was organized by the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation, an entity founded by the Berlin government as a means for continuing and honoring  America’s cold war ties to Berlin.
  • David Lindquist published four articles related to Holocaust and Genocide education in leading academic journals. At the present time he has three additional articles in press and an additional four articles under review.
  • David Lindquist organized and presented two full day Holocaust workshops for pre-service teachers. Each program was sponsored by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. One program was held at Ball State University and the other program was held at Illinois State University. He also organized and presented a full day teacher workshop of behalf of the Bureau of Jewish Education, Indianapolis, and presented at the 20th annual conference of the Arkansas Holocaust Education Committee, Springdale AR. 
 
 3. To promote public participation in efforts to confront contemporary genocide as it occurs
  • Steven Alan Carr joined Board of the Burmese Advocacy Center, 2012
  • David Lindquist served as Committee Member for an Allen County Public Library program; for the Fort Wayne Jewish Federation Annual Yom Hashoah Remembrance
  • David Lindquist served as Presenter for the Fort Wayne Jewish Federation Adult Education Series, Confronting the Shoah
